Students carry banners at commencement

Filed under: Printed Signs, Vinyl Banners & Signs, vinyl banners — Tags: , , — admin @ 10:04 am

Thirteen students will carry their school banners as they lead the 2009 graduating class through the Campanile and down the hill to the commencement ceremony May 17.

One student from each of the University’s 12 professional schools and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were selected by administration and faculty to carry the banners as part of a 101-year-old tradition.

“The deans and the faculty pull together a list of outstanding students and faculty-nominated ones,” Toni Dixon, director of communications for the School of Business, said. “They look for students who have been very involved in the school, clubs and activities.”

Bethany Shelton, Overland Park graduate student, will carry the banner for the School of Law and said she was a little nervous.

“I think it’ll be exciting and a little intimidating,” Shelton said. “I’m a bit klutzy so I hope I don’t trip.”

Joe Isaac, Wichita senior, found out about a month ago that he had been selected to carry the School of Business banner.

“I didn’t know much about it but as I read through the letter, I thought it was pretty cool and I realized it was a pretty big privilege,” Isaac said. “It’s going to be kind of weird not being able to sit with my friends, but it’ll be a big honor to be on stage with the other banner carriers and deans.”

A.J. Naeger, Lawrence senior and nontraditional student, said his wife and son would be in the audience as he carried the banner for the School of Architecture.

“I’m not nervous,” Naeger said. “I’m just happy I don’t have to give a speech.”

Small Businesses Optimistic About The Future

Filed under: Advertising Products, How to promote your business, Printed Signs — Tags: , , — admin @ 8:47 am

(NAPSI)-There’s encouraging news for America’s entrepreneurs: Despite anxiety about the economy, 75 percent of small-business owners are confident they will be open for business at this time next year, and almost half say they would be willing to open another small business today if they had the proper financial backing.

In addition, the second annual FedEx Office Signs of the Times national small-business survey found that a greater number of those polled plan to invest in themselves, with nearly half (47 percent) planning to increase their marketing and advertising spending this year as a result of the economy, compared to 38 percent who considered the change last year.

Signs Mean Business

When budgets are tight, many small businesses turn to the basics of marketing, and the use of signs and banners to grab customer attention is a time-tested technique. In fact, 74 percent of small businesses polled believe signs, banners and posters help drive customers to businesses. Another 55 percent indicated they use them regularly in their current strategy, and 79 percent said they agreed or strongly agreed that they are cost-effective marketing and advertising tools.

HCI Annual Spring Festival, Auction and Car Show

Having choices is empowering.  Choice helps us to realize our dreams.  At HCI, we understand that this is especially true for people with disabilities.  Our mission is to support people with disabilities as they discover and implement their personal goals in life by promoting access to community resources and providing programs that support choice and increase independence.

HCI services are community based and include programs for people who are physically and mentally disabled (including people with severely disabling conditions) those who have chronic neuromuscular diseases, and those who are disabled simply due to the aging process.  HCI respects and serves individuals without regard to place of residence – personal homes, group or residential treatment facilities.

Through discovery and understanding of individual needs, HCI models its approach to supporting people with disabilities.  Too many people are taught to stay where they are and accept the limitations of stereotypes and society.  HCI says “through discovery one can learn and expand their abilities, set goals and we will help you achieve them.”

Jeweller puts up banner to support shoe throwing incidents

Mumbai (PTI) As incidents of footwear being thrown at political leaders increase across the country, a jeweller in suburban Bandra has put up a banner saying a shoe is the best tool to teach corrupt politicians a lesson.

“The throwing of a shoe at leaders just shows how bad conditions are and how frustrated people are with their leaders. The shoe should not be used as a weapon but as a tool to hurt the ego of leaders,” Kishore Valchand Jain told PTI.

“It lets leaders know about what has gone wrong in society. What other tool does a common man have to show his frustration?” Mr. Jain said.

Mr. Jain says he has been putting up banners with social messages against corruption and terrorism for the last 10 years outside his store and changes them every fortnight.

Chrysler Brand May Become Another Orphan

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:35 am

SANTEE, Calif. — “Who would’ve ever thought I could take a Chrysler to an ‘orphan’ car meet?” said Jim Jensen, a vintage Chrysler restorer here. “They built some of the greatest cars ever made. Who would’ve believed they could foul a great thing up so bad that they’d run the company out of business?”

Mr. Jensen restored my 1957 Chrysler Saratoga coupe, a glorious example of the “Forward Look” styling of Virgil Exner, the company’s chief designer. The car was Gauguin Red with a white roof, powered by a Hemi V-8.

Mr. Jensen and I actually had this conversation almost 10 years ago, just as the restoration was finishing up. He drove my Chrysler to the Monday Night Car Club meet in nearby Lakeside, Calif. I showed up in a new, black Plymouth Prowler. The two cars tied for Best of Show honors. It seemed like an affirmation of Chrysler’s styling and engineering greatness, old and new.

Memory Guy eyes an unforgettable outcome at world competition

Filed under: Name Tags, name badges, networking — Tags: , — admin @ 7:45 am

FORT WORTH, Texas — Ron White gets the questions all the time. “Do you remember my name?” they’ll say, smiling, covering up their name tags. “I met you a year ago at a conference.” | Memory Guy’s secrets

As the self-proclaimed Memory Guy and now a record-holding U.S. Memory Champion, the Euless, Texas, man expects to be challenged again and again.

“If I’m going to experience the positives of being the Memory Guy, I’m going to take the negatives,” he said.

And, no, he doesn’t remember every name from every conference or seminar he has attended. But if he needs to remember a name and face, he will. And, White says, so can you.

“I’m not a genius,” says White, 35. “I’m not Rain Man. But I’m a very hard worker.”

His efforts have paid off. Besides presenting workshops and seminars through his successful memory-training business, he won the U.S. Memory Championship in New York last month among 52 competitors, breaking two national records in the process.

He’s now gearing up for a three-day international competition in Bahrain set for late November.
